When you need to invest in some car insurance, you should first know the rules and regulations in your state with regards to the minimum levels of liability and coverage. This is particularly important if you are looking to spend the minimum possible on your auto insurance rates; you must be sure that the levels of car insurance you are buying will satisfy the minimum coverage levels required in your state.
In order to find the best prices, the best and simplest advice is simply to shop around as much as you can. Ask your friends and company about their insurance companies, previous companies, and recommendations about who has the best prices. You can also call around to different insurance companies to get prices quotes. Before asking for a quote, make sure you know all your information as well as how much of what type of driving you’ll be doing and the make, model, mileage, and condition of your car so that you can get an accurate car insurance rate quote. It is also easy to get auto insurance coverage rate quotes online, and some convenient websites will actually allow you get get multiple car insurance quotes from different auto insurance companies with only one form. Shopping around will allow you to find the lowest rates out there.
There are many other ways to save money, especially with changing the options on your car insurance. For example, you can opt for higher deductibles for claims, lower your levels of coverage, opt out of comprehensive car coverage, or opt out of collision coverage. Make sure you understand what levels of coverage and insurance you are signing up for so that you don’t get surprised about what is not covered later on. Also, you must make sure that your car insurance policy still satisfies the minimum liability coverage levels that are required in your locale or state.
Other ways to save money with car insurance is with good driver discount, good student discounts for those students that get good grades, and getting a car insurance discount for taking a defensive driving class. You can usually also get a sizable discount from your auto insurance carrier if you insure multiple cars that you own with them. The other discount you can get is to sign up for other insurance such as life, health, rental, and homeowners insurance with the same company as your car insurance, especially when the insurance company you are considering is large enough to offer all those other types of insurance.
With regard to car insurance, price might not actually be everything. The level of customer services and ease of filing claims are also very important considerations in choosing an auto insurance company. Ask your friends and family about their past experiences with filing a claim or with dealing with customer service. These personal experiences are invaluable evidence about the reliability and service of a particular car insurance company. You can also consult business review sites or services such as the Better Business Bureau to look at past complaints about certain car insurance companies with customers and how those complaints were resolved.

I heard about the state of Massachusetts starting an experiment with car insurance coverage recently and wanted to know more about it. Could you tell me more about that auto insurance experiment?
Recently, the state of Massachusetts started a car insurance experiment projected to run for two years. They instituted a “managed competition” plan which promotes more car insurance companies to come into the state and compete for customers. The idea is that with more competition and less regulations setting the car insurance prices, the residents and drivers in the state will have more options for car insurance companies and thus be able to find lower prices.
Previously in the state of Massachusetts, car insurance rates were set by state regulators. With this new experiment, those rates levels are no longer set and auto insurance companies are free to compete. The major possible disadvantage of this experiment is that with the focus on lower prices only, that customer services levels, consumer protections, and ease of claim filing will go down.
Only time will tell consumer protections and service levels in car insurance will drop in the state along with the drops in car insurance rates. So far, consumers and drivers in the state have already observed lower rates overall with auto insurance coverage. Let’s hope as drivers and consumers that the Massachusetts auto insurance experiment will be a success. We’ll keep you posted.
